Location
Earl's Anchorage is well placed for easy access to Island walks and major east and west Lagoon beaches, including Ned's Beach, winner of the NSW Cleanest Beach Award 2004. Falling in a westerly direction the beautiful site is heavily vegetated around each boundary, along the south by a magnificent stand of Kentia Palms, unique to Lord Howe.

What appeals most is the sense of protection and privacy: a 'nautical village' in the middle of dense vegetation, with the bungalows located down the southern boundary to maximise privacy, and the much desired northern light.

Unique Design Features
Each generously sized bungalow is different, some more noticeably than others. Different roof shapes, window placement and proportions have been used to create interesting spaces. Every Living/Dining/ Kitchen has a northern aspect to maximise winter warmth, with direct access to a northern outside deck area. Each Living/Dining room has a unique ceiling shape from sweeping vaults to pitched, and we have carefully positioned each building to be separate and achieve a pleasant private outlook, while maintaining a connected 'village feel'.

Unique ceiling shapes

Most furniture has been carefully handcrafted by renowned Tasmanian wooden boat builder Ned Trewartha. using specially selected timber chosen to suit the character of each bungalow. An interesting boardwalk meanders through the whole site linking each bungalow and ultimately the proposed future restaurant building. New planting beds and mounding have been introduced to support the existing site planting, add to privacy of bungalows and integrate the boardwalk to the site. This is the only accommodation on the Island with reverse cycle air conditioning.

Also unique to Earl's Anchorage, a Bungalow ('Smoky Cape') with facilities for the disabled.

Earl’s Anchorage is based on sustainable design ideas employing lightweight construction and energy efficiency. It uses solar hot water and stores excess electricity in a battery bank, then calling upon it via an inverter when there is the demand. There is also treatment and recycling of grey water on site.

Earl’s Anchorage honours throughout ecologically sound design in keeping with the world heritage listing of Lord Howe Island.
